How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture works to relieve pain by affecting neurotransmitters, circulation, hormone levels, and the immune system. Needle insertion at or near an injury increases blood flow to the injury site, which speeds recovery. It also triggers the release of the body’s natural painkillers and stress-relieving hormones. Importantly, the inserted needle acts as an “on switch” for our immune systems, boosting our body’s natural healing response and ability to fight infection. Finally, in the absence of pain, stress, and anxiety, our bodies can begin the healing process without the negative side effects that come with pharmaceuticals.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatment plans are customized to the condition, and each patient responds to acupuncture differently depending on underlying health and fitness. After discussing your case and getting to know you as a patient, I provide a detailed treatment plan outlining how long it will take to “get well.”
How long does a treatment last?
First-time treatment includes a review of the patient’s health history and usually takes between an hour to an hour and a half. Follow-up appointments usually are 45 minutes to an hour. Acupuncture treatments typically take 20 to 30 minutes.
How many needles are used in treatment?
Typically between 5 to 10 needles are used for treatment, although some patients require more and some less. There is no set number of needles required for acupuncture treatments.
I’m afraid of needles. Can I still do acupuncture?
Needle phobia is common in patients who are new to acupuncture. I have had many needle-phobic patients, and working with them at their pace and within their comfort zones, I have been able to create relaxing treatments for them. After a few treatments, these fears dissipate, and they look forward to the relief and healing that their treatments provide.
Does acupuncture hurt?
The number one comment I hear from new patients is, “Wow, I can’t believe this doesn’t hurt!”. Acupuncture needles are similar in size to a strand of hair, making them barely perceptible. Patients will report sensations of heaviness, tingling, warmth, and occasionally electricity at needle insertion sites. Treatment is for your benefit, so your complete comfort is my priority.
